Roman Chapel in Mauthausen, Austria St. Barbara's chapel, which dates back to the middle of the 13th century, stands on a hill above the Danube in Mauthausen. Note the gate to the right, which is shown in the photo below.  Through the doorway, you can see the rooftops of the town of Mauthausen with the Danube river in the background.  The photo above was taken from the hill where the Roman Chapel stands above the town of Mauthausen. In the background you can see the Danube river; on the right is the Roman chapel dating back to 1250.   This monument to the war dead from Mauthausen stands next to the parish church, which is shown in the previous photo. This is a sad sight that you will see in every town throughout Germany and Austria, where millions died for their country.
