The majority of the prisoners at Mauthausen were Catholic, including a large number of Spanish prisoners who had fought against the Fascists in the Spanish Civil War. There were also Polish Catholics and French resistance fighters who were Catholic. Jews were not sent to Mauthausen in large numbers until the Spring of 1944 when the deportation of the Hungarian Jews began.
