Klingen Tower

The top of the Klingen Tower

The Klingen Tower is 30 meters high; it was built in the 13th century, while the bastion in front of the tower was built around 1500. Note the oriel windows and the lantern hood on the top of the tower, as shown in the photo above. In the 16th century, large copper water tanks were installed and the tower is now used as a water reservoir to supply the town's wells.

The photo below shows the access to the wall at the Klingentor. The door on the right is the entrance to a small house that is under the wall. I was told by a tour guide that this was formerly the house where the hangman lived. Convicted criminals were hanged on a gallows outside the Galgentor (Gallows gate). Note in the second photo below that there is laundry drying on a clothesline outside the little house.
