Virtual Tour of Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Strafturm near the Klingen Gate

Strafturm or Punishment Tower

Closeup of wooden platform outside one of the windows

The photos above show the Strafturm (Punishment Tower) which is at the northwest corner of the city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, near the Klingentor. Among other things, the Punishment Tower was used to imprison any young man who refused to marry the mother of his illegitimate child, until he changed his mind.

After photographing the Strafturm, I walked south along the path which leads from the tower to the Burgtor, a route with a wonderful view of the valley. On the path to the Burgtor is the house where Dr. Karlstadt escaped from a window at the close of the Peasants War in 1525, when a number of the rebels were beheaded on the Market Square in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

The former Dominican Priory, which is now the Imperial City Musuem, is located on the west side of the city, just south of the Strafturm.
