Post Office & Hotel Avril in Oradour-sur-Glane

The photo above shows the post office, which is located near the tram station in Oradour-sur-Glane. The postman, Gabriel Senon, who was out of his rounds, was among the survivors.

Across the intersection of the entrance road and the main street in the Upper Town is the Hotel Avril which is shown in the photo above. On the day of the Massacre, the Hotel Avril was full of guests including a family of Jewish refugees, living there under an assumed name. The children of this family, two girls aged 18 and 22 and a boy, aged 9, hid under an outside staircase leading to the garden. They stayed there until the hotel was set on fire around 5 p.m. Then they made their escape across three gardens; they were stopped by SS soldiers, who decided to let them go.

The photo below shows the ruins of houses and barns at the north end of Rue de Emile Desourteaux.
