The Upper Town in Oradour-sur-Glane
In Oradour-sur-Glane, the northern end
of the main street, Rue de Emile Desourteaux, is called the Upper
Town and the southern end, near the Church, is referred to as
the Lower Town. Originally tourists were allowed to enter the
village from either end. The photo above shows the Dupic house
where the SS soldiers spent the night after burning all the other
buildings in the town. It is located at the north end of Rue
de Emile Desourteaux in the Upper Town.
The photo below shows another view of
the Dupic house. According to the Official Publication, the soldiers
had a drunken orgy after the massacre, consuming 25 bottles of
champagne which they had found in the Dupic house. There were
around 200 SS soldiers who were involved in the massacre.
The last house on the northern end of
Rue de Emile Desourteaux is shown in the photo above. The sign,
with the word "Silence" is the original sign placed
at the northern entrance to the ruins. This entrance is now closed.
The photo below shows a closer view of the house. Notice the
old well; the houses in Oradour-sur-Glane did not have running
water.
