Hebras family grave at Oradour-sur-Glane
The photo above shows the grave of the
Hebras family in the cemetery at Oradour-sur-Glane. Nineteen-year-old
Robert Hebras was one of those who miraculously escaped from
the burning Laudy barn, but his mother and two sisters perished
in the church. As of the 10th of June 2004, the 60ieth anniversary
of the massacre, he was still alive.
According to Sarah Farmer, in her book
entitled "Martyred Village," Robert Hebras joined the
Maquis, as the French
resistance was called, at the end of June 1944 following
the destruction of the village and the murder of 642 people by
Waffen-SS soldiers of the elite German army.
The photo below shows the ruins of the
Laudy barn. Robert Hebras escaped along with four other men through
a door in the back of the barn which is shown in the center of
the photo, just to the right of the church tower that is sticking
up in the background.
The photo below shows the other side
of the Laudy barn on the left. The street which the man in the
photo is entering is the road to the cemetery. The church is
behind the camera in this view.
