Graves in Oradour-sur-Glane Cemetery

The photo above shows some of the graves in the Oradour-sur-Glane cemetery with the tall column of the Ossuary in the background. Most of the graves are beautifully decorated with momentos and flowers. Many of the graves are enclosed by glass which resembles a greenhouse, as shown in the background of the photo below.

The photo above shows the grave of a young girl who died in the massacre. The photo below shows the grave of four young girls, all in the same family, who were killed on the 10th of June 1944. The decorations on the grave are made of porcelain. The white stone says that they were murdered by a horde of Nazis. All of the graves of the victims say that the murderers were Nazis or Germans, forgetting that one third of the perpetrators of the massacre were Frenchmen from Alsace.

The names on the gravestone above are Claudine, age 13; Renee, age 10; Huguette, age 7; and Maryse, age 6. There is no last name on the white stone which displays their photographs. These names are not on the list of the people who were identified, which is included in the official publication of the survivors.

The bodies of only 52 people were positively identified and death certificates were issued for them. There were an additional 590 people officially reported missing and believed dead. They were either living in Oradour-sur-Glane at the time of the massacre or were there for shopping or dining in the cafes and hotels. On the 10th of July 1945, the Court of Rochechouart pronounced that 585 of the missing persons should be considered to be victims of the massacre and should carry in the official register the inscription "Died for France." The names of 5 others were added later.

Listed below are the names of the 26 residents of the village, whose bodies were identified. Note that 20 of the 26 were not born in Oradour-sur-Glane, although some were born in villages or hamlets nearby.
