Map shows that prison compound was only a small part of the Dachau complex

To your right as you face the gatehouse, there is a large wooden sign with a huge aerial photo of the camp. A faded red line shows the rectangular area of the prison compound. An SS training camp and a garrison for Waffen-SS soldiers was located west of the prison compound. It was four or five times the size of the concentration camp. The US Army used the former SS garrison until 1973. Most of the SS buildings have been torn down.
