View of the west half of the former concentration
camp which is now a Memorial Site
From the gate house, tour groups usually walk north on the
path on the west side of the camp, which leads to the crematorium
and the five gas chambers. This path goes past 16 rectangular
beds of gravel which represent the locations of buildings torn
down in 1964. On the other side are 16 more gravel beds where
buildings used to stand. In the center, the round building is
the Catholic Church of the Mortal Agony of Christ. Directly behind
it are the white buildings of the Carmelite Convent. On the left
is the Protestant Church of Reconciliation. The Jewish Memorial
is a small, partially-underground building in the northeast corner.
