The first sight that prisoners saw upon theirarrival at the Concentration Camp in Dachau was the sign on thisclosed gate which reads "Arbeit Macht Frei" in Germanor Work Makes One Free in English.This slogan became a standardfeature of the Nazi Concentration Camps and appeared on the gatesof later camps, such as the one at Auschwitzin Poland. Note the other sign in front of the west wing ofthe operations building which indicates that this picture wastaken after the camp was turned into a Memorial Site.
