Appellplatz or Roll Call Square where prisonerswere counted morning and evening

According to the Museum Guidebook, every morningat roll call, the men of each barrack room paraded together asa platoon on the Appellplatz. The men of each barrack block formeda company with a prisoner "sergeant" responsible fordiscipline. Prisoners who were common criminals were generallythe ones who were put in charge. In the Summer time, roll callwas at 5:15 a.m. after the prisoners were awakened at 4 a.m. Inthe Winter months, the prisoners were awakened at 5 a.m. Followingroll call and breakfast, the prisoners would be marched off tobegin their 12-hour workday in a camp workshop or in a factoryoutside the grounds, according to the Guidebook.
