According to Michael Selzer, the residentsof the town of Dachau had hung white bed sheets from their windowsto signal their surrender as Ameircan soldiers marched throughthe town on their way to liberate the Dachau camp. At the camp,there were also white flags which had been flying from the guardtowers since early morning, but according to his account, therewas machine gun fire from the SS guards, and the American soldierskilled the guards in the towers.
