Reconstructed Jourhaus gate into the Dachau prison
compound
The gate with the words "Arbeit Macht Frei" was
erected at the entrance to the Dachau camp in 1937. It was removed
by the Americans, but reconstructed in 1965 when the Memorial
Site was built. In English it means "Work will set you free."
These words were also put over the gates into the main Auschwitz
camp in Poland and the Sachsenhausen camp near Berlin.
